But then again , for seasoned game angler John Clark it's time to hit the famous River Test... but.... , not for trout.!!

John has mastered the art of winter pike on the fly... armed with his rod of choice and a well researched box of John's own flies, he methodically combed the water to locate his prize... and what a prize, the regular angler making the most of the short window to coarse fish the legendary River Test at Timsbury.
During our visit John was happy to share his knowledge and experience, but even more evident was John's real passion for game angling and determined commitment to pike fishing with the fly... What will you be doing next winter.... see you bank side.. !

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">The fishing available at Cayo Cruz / Romano covers one of the most extensive areas anywhere in the Caribbean. The vast number of flats are protected from the north by a string of Cays, collectively known as Jardines del Rey (Garden of the King).

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">The Cays, are literally uninhabited and apart from your boat partner and guide you are unlikely to see anyone else while out on the water. Cayo Cruz / Romano is therefore the perfect habitat for bonefish, tarpon and permit. Made up a series of mangrove lagoons and flats that run for hundreds of kilometres, most flats, of white sand interspersed with turtle grass and mangrove are ideal for those who want to wade or fish from the skiff.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt;">The flats and Cays are extremely rich in crustacean life, which enable both the bonefish and permit to exceed the sizes found elsewhere around the Caribbean.

Lush banks and gin clear waters, anglers, were in for a real treat.

This years event attracted 34 anglers with the objective to catch 4 fish using a fly with a points value.

Seasoned Meon angler and ex Meon boss Keith Poulton , provided each angler with three superb flies, dry kites, a buzzer and nymph. Anglers could use any one fly to tempt fish with points being awarded, weight of the fish x the value of the fly.

With lots drawn, delicious bacon buttes consumed, a quick briefing soon saw angler to the water.

The morning proved very productive, with some good fish coming to the scale and making for an exciting event. Lunch time provided a very welcome break , our hosts "Team Meon" providing a terrific BBQ lunch followed by our sponsors fund raising raffle.
Back to the water anglers could now roam freely, but with a hot sun now high in the bright blue sky, fish became tough to tempt to any fly. The ringing of the bell marked the end of the afternoon session and our return to the lodge for the final tally .

WWT Director Shaun Leonard joined the group , providing us all with a wonderful insight into the vitally important projects and work that WWT carry out on a daily basis. Shaun also reflected on the importance of today, the fund raised in memory of Pasco James continue to make a direct impact in the Meon Valley ( add Meon work) .
Some twenty seven new fly anglers had a great day at the waters edge fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout . Blessed with fine weather all angler struck lucky with some super fish coming to the bank. With mentors allocated and rods assembled it was off to the water for some fishing and instruction. The group fished the morning hard, meeting back at the lodge for some very welcome food and refreshments.

All set for the aftenoon session and with a cooler feel to the breeze our angler continued to learn and experience the thrill of flyfishing. Top catch for the day went to Roma

One key feature on the reel is its impressive drag system, this is a completely sealed unit that requires zero maintenance , so always ready for the next blistering run. Super smooth and able to apply some slick pressure just when you need it. Light weight, the reels compliment the latest rods out there, so wither stalking the flats or climbing a mountain stream, these reels will provide you with a balanced outfit that you could carry all day.
On a recent trip I had armed one of my rods with TFO's superb BVK ( Bernard Victor Kreh ) fly reel. Beautifully machined, the reel is a striking piece of equipment that looks so cool. The large arbor is superlight and the spool nests perfectly into its housing allowing no movement to allow debris to interfere with the silky smooth running of the spool.

Able to tame the most explosive of fish the fully sealed drag applies tons of prefectly timmed pressure via a large yet sleek adjuster that even the largest of hands can locate in an instant. Not to mention the retrieval, the massive arbor makes light work when taming any searing runs or turns, putting you in control in an instant.
Well balanced and expertly proportioned this beautiful reel should be on your list of ones to own.
Enjoy your fishing and the experience. david@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234758840533042566.post-77668719190030947942013-12-19T21:52:00.002+00:002015-05-30T16:55:14.311+01:00Kingdom of the Grand Slam
Seasons come and seasons go, fishing comes and fishing goes, but add Saltwater Fly Fishing into the equation and you’ll be talking about it forever. Don’t get me wrong I truly love all my fishing but I must say the latter delivers such a thrill, you’ll be hooked forever…

Our world continues to shrink as our ability to travel freely grows and with new fishing opportunity appearing to open around every corner, the only limitation appears to be you, or that all important budget. But destination Fly Fishing does not have to break the bank, many thrilling locations offer some great value packages and the promise of some amazing fly fishing that will suit all budgets and more importantly your abilities.
Our trip, as I am sure most, started as a casual chat over beer, where would we go? , for how long?, what’s it like , what would we need?… so on and so on…… I have always loved to hear the stories of other anglers as they reflect on prizes caught and the ever teasing one, that was so close ..., and remains so far. But it is by listening and talking to as wide an array of anglers and agents you will start to build a picture of what good may look like... no guarantees, remember this is fishing.!!
This year we had a mixed group of both novice and improving anglers, so the right location would be key…. But where ? After a few Internet searches the odd DVD and more importantly a chat with Mat McHugh- of Fly Odyssey we settled on the excellent value and location of Mexico’s Ascension Bay.

Punta Allen is located a short hop off the north shores of Ascension Bay. A part of the Sian Ka`an Biosphere Reserve, the location is a protected ecology absolutely steeped in wild life and where you can encounter, snook, bonefish, tarpon and permit from a myriad of locations. Punta Allen’s peninsular spearheads the access to a wide expanse of tarpon stuffed lagoons, open water channels and beautiful post card flats which teem with bonefish, jacks, barracuda and of course the revered permit. You have just entered the Kingdom of the Grand Slam.... But, if that’s not enough you can throw in a number of seasonal off shore options.
Next it was kit, and the old adage of less is more will serve you well. I armed myself with three rods, 8#, 9w# and a10w#, with all reels loaded with 200yrd of backing. In reality two rods would have been fine but three did offer another dimension - as this could be rigged for a possible trophy shot - 40lb Barracuda are not uncommon

One area not to scrimp on… is lines, do spend some time selecting the right lines and leaders, after all you do want to see your fish of a lifetime…! Talk to experienced anglers and make the most of your local tackle dealers, there are quite often specific items and flies for the areas you may be travelling to. For example Ascension bay have some fantastic skinny water flats where the lightest of bonefish flies are vital for a stealthy presentation. Get it right and your reel will be screaming all day.
Other items are personal preference but do take good polarising sun glasses, amber and copper being ideal and pack plenty sun protection.

We flew direct London to Cancun arriving late PM. Upon arrival you are quickly met by your transfer host, and it’s off to Punta Allen, via Tulum. On arrival at Punta Allen you are welcomed by Manuel Chac and his team and quickly introduced to your rooms for some well earned rest. Manuel’s lodge “Casa Viejo Chac” is perfectly located and very comfortable, the team are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Food was excellent and presented to a high standard.

Manuel is a wealth of information, passionate, enthusiastic and highly skilled, our group were hungry to learn. The guides at Casa Viejo Chac are all highly experienced and very knowledgeable and with good English our anglers were quickly at ease and learning from the whole experience.

Fishing proved very good, even with some unseasonal weather to contend with, fortunately for us most appeared to circumnavigate the bay leaving us to enjoy prolonged tropical sunshine and explosive action. Our group caught countless bonefish on a daily basis, added to the mix were tarpon, snook, barracuda, jacks and even a couple of small permit. With the huge array of flats, channels and lagoons the opportunities were endless, our guides located fish on a daily basis ensuring us shots at every species while introducing us to an amazing diversity of wild life, such as eagles, flamingos, herons and crocodiles to name but a few..

Punta Allen went way beyond expectation, it boasts a multitude of species in a beautiful and diverse location and with simple direct access I would regard it as an idea destination for both first time and experienced anglers.
As with all Sonik's, the rod arrived in the robust cordura zip top tube which is clearly marked with the discription, size and rod rating. Inside a neatly sectioned cloth sleeve ensures sound protection for the rod within.
First views of the sections imediately lift the spirt, a well finished blank of olive gloss set off some very fine gold highlighting to the whips. Rod connections are very neat with the now standard "dot to dot" alignment system , a great aide for a swift set up. I had the 9ft 5/6 rod which for a middle to tip action has a surprisingly fast action that delivered some very tight loops, yet it remained forgiving enough to recover the odd waver or miscast . The rod delivered well at both short and medium range, but, it simply sung with absolute ease when delivering a long line. I was using Snowbee's XS plus.
The rod which comes in 4 sections, is a great all round stillwater rod, and well worth considering if your looking for a step up to a faster action. A powerful blank with sensitivity, its a perfect transition rod for advancing and experienced anglers.david@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234758840533042566.post-58150213862772320032013-11-29T14:24:00.002+00:002013-11-29T14:24:34.096+00:00Children of Porchester School 2013How quickly these event return each year... but none is more enjoyable than that of the students from Porchester Community School. This years event would follow that of the passed, offering the angler who catches the biggest fish to claim the spoils. Always a competitive event, this years winner Harry Adams, took a fish of 5lbs 8oz to secure the title, chasing off close competition from Regan Laing and previous enthusiastic champion angler Joshua Sparks.
Twelve anglers, took part in the event, supported by mentors from the Partnership Fly Fishing club and the brilliant staff of Meon Springs . Fishing proved top notch , beautiful Rainbow trout lead a merry dance throughout the day . Well done Harry and thank you all involved, special thanks to Chris Read who's vital charity, A Smile for a Child supported the day.david@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234758840533042566.post-91031241928785414532013-09-19T10:46:00.002+01:002013-09-19T10:46:20.103+01:00Fishing for Forces 2013
It's captor completely stunned by the bankside attention remained quite unaware of the achievement that had just unfolded before our eyes.
Fishing a dry daddy, the specimen rose from the fast water to engulf that fly. There ensused a dogged battle until the fish was finally and safely guided over the waiting net. Quickly photographed and weighed the fish was swiftly slipped back to the water. Perhaps next time it will top the scale as a magic record breaker..
Partnership Fly Fishing Club raise £2,400 in aid of the Wild Trout Trust

Saturday 22 June saw the fourth annual 'Three Fly Challenge' held at Meon Springs, organised by Neil Mundy and in aid of the 'Wild Trout Trust' . 25 anglers fished to score points using three different flies to catch four trout each. David King (above) won the competition with 28 points catching all of his four trout on a dry fly, he won a brand new Sage Fly Rod and an engraved tankard, Tim Kennard (far right) came second with 26 points. Neil Mundy and Shaun Leonard (left, Director of the WTT) presented the prize.
Shaun gave an informative and interesting over view of the WTT and its important function adding that the funds raise from today would be used for further projects on the River Meon in memory of Pasco James.david@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234758840533042566.post-24827996491933942282013-07-04T08:46:00.000+01:002013-07-04T08:46:13.414+01:00Safety Afloat- and a great day too..Deep water at the best of time can be a risk, but when bobbing around in open water while fishing then that risk just went higher.
On a recent trip to Farmoor 1, Chris and Neil, had a blast as the water fished it's socks off. Gleaming bars of silver all fully finned led the guys a merry dance during their session. Alway competive the battle ended 12-9... (catch and release). Don't worry, I'll save you the embarsment Chris...oops.
But the main point of this blog, is the picture, which I felt depicts good water safety. While Neil plays a nice rainbow on the choppy water, he is well position on the seat and in full control of the equipemnt and fish, around his neck, a life support system, and of course the standard cap and glasses.
Well done guys , a great day all round, nice looking Hardy reel too.
A tone of gunmetal and gold highlights add the most perfectly balanced style to a beautiful piece of engineering.
The spool change is a quick affair by unscrewing the central nut , give a firm pull and bingo... push back and the spool beds in without any movement around the housing.
Supplied in a neoprene case and with size options the reel offers excellent value and looks and feels a million dollars, a great buy for the price.
It all started with a long planned family holiday in Florida. We were taking our two daughters and their three children to Orlando for a week and then sending them all home, then my wife and I taking a further two weeks on the Gulf coast without them.

My old fishing buddy, Dave King, had given me lots of advice about fishing the Gulf, so my number one target was to be Snook off the beach. However, I also wanted to catch a Red Fish on fly and reports on the area looked promising.

We had booked a Condo on Siesta Key just west of Sarasota with it's own private fishing dock, bayside and private beach ocean side, plus swimming pool and shops locally to keep my other half content.

We encountered some very heavy thunderstorms on the 2 hour drive from Orlando, typical for the time of year. The first day was sunny and bright, but the ocean was very murky and full of weed. Not what I had expected! June 1st is officially the start of the hurricane season. The next three days were all downhill on the fishing front as the first tropical storm of the season, Andrea, got its act together in the Gulf of Mexico,
hitting us on Thursday June 6th with 7 inches of rain and strong winds.

My fishing for the first five days was a disaster confined to trying to catch Sheephead and Mullet from the dock on the bayside. Both seemed totally unimpressed with the fly so I have to revert to fishing for grunts off the dock with shrimp.

The local residents told me stories of Redfish being caught from the dock but for the first 11 days I never saw the hint of a Redfish. After the storm the ocean calmed down and fishing started to pick up considerably. I started to catch Snook, Spanish mackerel and Ladyfish off the beach. Each morning a large heron would join me at day break and wait to be fed a couple of Ladyfish for his breakfast. Fishing was a lot better. The weed had gone and the water started to clear and I always seems to manage to catch a snook at sunset. I was happy at last. But after at least 30 visits to the fishing docks I am now thinking Redfish of the Dock are an Urban Myth or maybe it's the wrong time of year?

June 13th I managed to make the beach before sunrise to be met with a head wind. Casting my white zonker with lead eyes was hard work, even my friendly heron gave up on me and departed. So I decided to try a shrimp fly on the dropper and small shrimp crab like fly pattern on the point and go back to the docks to try and tempt the barnacle crunching Sheephead. I fished the north dock with no success and though I would just walk up and down the south dock before going back for coffee, but again no luck and as I turned to walk off the dock to my amazement I spotted two Redfish in less that two feet of water.
Easy cast I thought. My line was peeled off my reel quickly and with two false casts the point fly landed absolutely perfectly 30 inches in front of the lead fish, two twitches of the line and he was on the fly like he had not eaten all week. I lifted and the line and it went tight ( in hindsight I should have done the saltwater strip strike) but anyhow I am now connected to a very angry Redfish. My first thought was I don't want to play this fish off the dock as he will run under the dock which would be only have one outcome line severed on the barnacles.

So I run off the dock and along the bank to get as far away from the dock as possible. I applied as much side strain as my Sage Xi2 would allow to the fish to try to get Mr Redifsh away from the dock. Redfish are real brutes like a carp on steroids. They fight long and hard. The next five minutes the battle was the fish doing all he could to get under the dock and me applying maximum side strain to try and stop him. He got very close on a couple of heart stopping runs before deciding to take the fight into the middle of the bay. By this time I had been joined by two onlookers. Eventually I started to gain the upper hand and the fish started to slow with shorter runs. This then gave me another problem, I am standing on top of a wall with a five foot drop to the water. The only option was to jump in, which resulted in a comedy moment where my flip flops fell off my feet and started to drift out to sea. So jump completed with fly rod in hand and flip flops recovered, I am still connected to the the fish. He weakened further so I grab the leader and he is mine. I lift the fish onto the bank. Two quick photos and the onlookers discussing how nice Redfish fillets are to eat, I remove the hook from the scissors of its jaw and slip the fish back into the water to recover and watch him swim away.
Ambition fulfilled. Well, for the moment.....
Fishing for Forces gets off to a great start this season with some 26 services personnel visiting the waters edge on Wednesday June 6. on the beautiful banks of Avon Springs.
Blessed with some fine weather spirits were high as fishermen and women prepared for the day ahead.

Following introductions by Bill Howell ( Founder of FFF) and a hearty breakfast , provided buy an incredible Avon Springs Trout Fishery team, Britain's finest were ready for action. Following a brief demonstration and safety talk the group paired up with the ever supportive mentors who kindly provide the vital assistance for the event.
To say the services are a competitive bunch would be an understatement, as yells of joy echo out with the first fish being landed seconds after the line first hit the water. But all were soon to realise the real benefit of the day as individuals relaxed and enjoyed a peaceful and fulfilling experience that is fly fishing.

By lunch time most had a fish or two, including complete beginner Capt Matthews who's tally of fish earned him the prize of heaviest bag....
As the day drew to a close one could reflect on the success of these ventures, introducing new people to a sport that we already love, but more, it is an opportunity to thank our Service personnel who put themselves in to the most dangerous situations , so we can carry on with our daily lives.
This nano is the new GEO 'Nano Technology' from Snowbee, if you have not tried one, then I suggest you do at the next opportunity.
While fishing a group of beginners, I had the chance to try the rod during a lunch break. The first thing that stood out was the effortless ability to deliver a straight precise line. So light and balanced it is a rod that you could simply cast and cast with. Next is the quality of the rod, finished to a very high standard the beautiful gunmetal grey and matching whips are finely presented and when the 4 sections connect (with the aid of dot to dot) you have a fantastic casting tool.
Snowbee suggest the blank to be as close to 'unbreakable' in normal use as possible and frankly with the feel of this rod I believe them. So impressive, I bought the 6wt the very next day. (The rod you won't want to put down) !!!david@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3234758840533042566.post-17187321655763321742013-04-06T15:59:00.001+01:002015-05-30T16:58:48.575+01:00Early Specimen Brown

Early season stalking session on the coldest of March mornings produces a 'specimen brown'... This terrific fish fell to a small black, gold ribbed PT.
On arrival at Lechlade Trout lakes it was off to the lodge to get signed in and have chat with the owner, then it was tackle up and off to the lakes with big fish in mind. With a few anglers already whipping water, my fishing buddy and I decided to take a long walk around the lakes before making any casts.
I left Chris on the larger of the two lakes while I continued round to the second. Water clarity was pretty good and with some early sunshine beaming down it looked encouraging for stalking opportunities. Spotting a few movements and shadows, I stopped in what looked to be a interesting area. With plenty bank side cover I was positioned well to intercept anything moving from left or right and I was particularly encourage with a few bow wave appearing slightly further out. Getting myself positioned and the rod ready for action there was a sudden explosion as a large looking brown trout jumped clear of the water like an Exocet missile.. , crashing back into the water, I very quickly made a cast straight into the splash zone, allowing the fly to sink a few feet my retrieve was quickly hit and all went tight. The fish took off quickly and immediately going deep it continued with some dogged thumps ...... you just know it has the feel of a good fish. After a great battle the fish final came to the surface showing the most beautifully marked and coloured flank. Fully finned and in prime condition the fish tipped the scale at 10.8 lb... what a start to the season.
Finally both Chris and I took further good fish but this fantastic brown stole the day. Thank you Lechladedavid@thatflyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11181922159021966059noreply@blogger.com0
